This was a great ride. Neo- Anime with an earthy group of characters and an edgy story line. Nice work Jesse and Company. I hope this gets the global attention it deserves.

In episode 2, just after the opening, one of the bridges in the background looks like the Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia. Now, judging from the fact that the site states the show is filmed in America, I am curious to know what bridge it is.
I really like the show, and think the whole concept is awesome. I really like the animation.
I am eagerly awaiting part 12.
Awesome show.

I saw this on The Escapist just recently. After viewing only one random episode I decided to donate to your site. Very unusual and striking. I enjoy this a lot. Things that blur the line between reality and fantasy are always tricky to do well, but I think you’ve struck a good balance. I wish you all success in everything you attempt.

Wow, Drawn by Pain is probably one of the best shows I’ve seen. The way it all comes together just blew me away. It makes me very sad that there is only going to be 12 episodes though. I’m looking forward to the conclusion of Drawn my Pain. Fantastic job Jess, and you too Erika on the animation.

Hi Jes and gang
Congratulations on such an amazing series, can’t wait for the final episode! Saw it over at the Escapist and managed to find this site, its awesome. I can’t wait for the DVD to come out, have to get it and a shirt shipped over to England/make sure they get delivered while I’m in America/Whatever…
I honestly hope film companies take notice of you now dude, their loss if not! Keep up the good work and all the best in your future projects, (Maybe a Animie Drawn by Pain webcomic???) I’ll sure to keep an eye out for them.
Thanks Richard! I just hope the story ends in a way that you enjoy honestly Hopefully more people like yourself come and check it out – we got into this to share something we care about and always love hearing someone digs it.
Thanks Kyle – we’ve thought about a graphic novel at points and would love to put one together.
Nothing makes me feel better than to know someone on the other side of the pond actually gets to see what I make in my apartment for the most part. The internet truly is amazing
The Bridges in the background are the Triboro bridge and another one (forget the name) here in Queens New York. Funny how things from one particular angle sometimes look so much like a place a world apart.
Glad you are enjoying it. We are hard at work on Episode 12 (should be a bit) and are really excited to hear what people think
Constructive yes (of which some of your post was). Insulting no. If you look thru the site you will see comments that reflect people’s thoughts, but all are done with respect for the time and energy put into this project. A lot of people enjoy it, but for some – it is not their cup of tea (which is completly cool!). Even for those who do not enjoy what they have seen – I only ask that they show the respect they themselves would desire upon their own ventures.

Just wanted you to know that the series is mind blown so far! I loved the whole dark-realistic concept with music that matched the scenes. Erica, Marissa and of course yourself, have created this addictive thing that I’ve watched over the last 3 days (yeah I watched it even whilst at work ). Gonna try to start a massive fan following down here cuz you guys deserve it! Awesome work again! Can’t wait for the second series (/hear hear!)
PS: Pls. don’t make shipping of the Soundtrack/DVD to Australia too expensive
Pleasure is all ours Zeca. Just glad you are diggin’ it!

This is a really good series =) Im really enjoying watching it – the combo of filming and animation is great and i really love the music in it too. Can’t wait to see how it ends.
Are you planning on doing any more projects like this or maybe another series afterwards?
I’m sure I’ll do something else – just not sure exactly what yet. Being in the trenches on this project makes it a bit hard to see anything else.
I’m just glad people like yourself enjoy what we are doing. Makes me want to do more.

Hi there Jes
Loving this series, and I’m showing it to all my mates here in New Zealand, land of hobbits and sheep. A couple of my friends are budding film makers so you’re a huge inspiration.
We love the NZ doods (one of long term supporters is from down there) and have been well trained to never call you Aussies!
And to think I am an inspiration for anything other than a life of crime is a huge compliment! Seriously though – feels nice to feel appreciated Thanks you so much for the kind words,

I first saw Drawn By Pain via The Escapist (Like a large number of the other commenters, I’ve noticed), and all I can say is… WOW! Well, my LJ entry regarding this series was titled ‘Holy S**t!’, and I’ve posted the promo film on both my LJ and my MySpace profile, in an effort to get my friends into DbP! This series just blows me away! On one hand, I’d love to see DbP become a feature film (with all the budget that entails!); on the other hand, I’ve seen the atrocities that can happen when something really cool gets to Hollywood! But I think I’d love to see DbP hit theaters, as long as you all somehow finagled creative freedom, along with the budget!
Can’t wait for Episode 12… except that means that DbP will be over, and that makes me a sad panda!

There is a lot of good and bad that can be said about this series, but I will try not to fly off into territory where the “little money” value comes into play. I am totally understanding where more budget could have improved some areas (And not improve others). Even though there is still one more episode to go I feel I can post up my overall thoughts on the series. I’ll hope you take them as they are. I am not any kind of aspiring person in making movies, but I do consider myself quite the movie buff. So…onto what actually matters here.
I stumbled onto the first episode of this in my “sort of weekly” internet surfing rides. At first I was kind of repelled in that it was an “abuse story.” I’ve read and seen far too many things on that subject to be excited. However the voice over of the young girl was an excellent narrator. The father also looked downright spooky. Even those things would not grab me into another abuse story however. The thing that finally got me curious is the animation aspect. The first thought that ran through my mind is another cliche, the “tortured superhero.” So the first episode was a lot of mixed feelings for me, but it drew me in enough to want to watch the second episode.
The moment I saw your leading lady Marissa Parness I thought the same thought I think any guy would think. “Wow, she’s pretty hot.” From that point I worried that this would shape up into something akin to the Tomb Raider movies. Angelina was hot too, but all the hotness in the world can’t make up for bad writing and at best passable acting. Luckily I was wrong on all these pretenses. She did not have the narration qualities I thought the younger Emily had, but she did the job just fine none the less. Ms. Marissa did very well on most of the episodes, my only critique is that sometimes her emotions do not seem natural, possibly explained as she is trying too hard. Sometimes the dialog seemed forced and I hate to say a lot of the antagonists in the various episodes were very hokey and straight out of a “flavor of the week” action show. The only exception I thought was Jonas (which is good seeing as he seems to be the series’ main human antagonist).
Don’t let any negative comments fool you, I did watch the series from episode 1-11. I watched with genuine interest and curiosity. If you can get people to do that you’ve succeeded where many…many…MANY people fail miserably. So the story does have a quality that draws you in. It also fails to live up to my original expectations which is an exceedingly good thing. Emily is not a super hero. To me she seemed less than human. She killed without regards to society and her powers deteriorated like her mental state to where she was hurting innocent people. She became her father. I was overall very pleased with the direction of the story and am looking forward to seeing the ending. All of that from my original thought to move on and not finish watching the first part.
The last thing I want to comment on is the animation. The art is very good and I enjoy the animated characters. I did not like the fact that there was no color though. I can see where it might have been hard to incorporate it on such a small budget, or maybe there was some meaning behind it. However I would have like to have seen the animations in color, especially when the emotions ran high. Kind of an indicator of what drives Emily’s power which unless I missed my mark, is pure emotion.
That is my short (relatively) take on your series. As I said, take it as it is. I do not claim to be some accomplished artist myself, but I do sometimes pretend to know how to critique it. Good luck on any future endeavors.
Corvis July 24th, 2008

Alrighty then. Feels silly, being that it’s posted after and equally long rant of explanation of the show, but here goes.
Bearing in mind that I do genuinely like the concept of the show, and that it’s rather well done for a low budget, episodic series. I’m quite impressed with the originality, the artwork for Emily’s abilities, and the overall ability to execute what you wanted to get across.
My first impressions upon meeting Emily is that the show will derive it’s meaning from truly fucked up situations, much like the one the young girl found herself in. As a huge horror fan, especially realistic horror, I was highly enticed by this. This first episode made a fantastic statement, and I was drawn in.
As I am currently at work, I’ve only been able to view the first 3, however, I am getting the feeling that there is an overlaying, highly feminist tone to the series. It feels similar to “Teeth” in the empowerment of women in a time of desperation. Which is good, and I support the message and the need for such a thing.
However, just as in “Teeth”, I continually feel that it seems ALL men are always the bad guys. I don’t take offense to this, but it just feels…off. Kinda highly sexist. I’m not sure. Anyways, like I said, I was only able to view the first 3 episodes, perhaps this takes a turn later.
Good luck with all your future endeavors, you guys are pulling off something that is a severe challenge.
Thank you Corvis – I think you’ll find that the series takes some steep twists from where it seems like it is going and who the evil character really is.
Thanks for the kind words on what you have seen – I really do look forward to your thoughts to the rest indeed
Thank you Mr. Man. Your critique was fair and honest. I’m glad you watched it all the way through. It’s not easy to get people to have more than 3 seconds of attention span on the web so I’m always happy with any success on that front.
Thx you so much for all the thoughts and look forward to reading your review of 12

I sat and watched all of the episodes and while the animation is rather good, the plot of this entire experience is not. This story did not make any sense to me. Was she some kind of Dark Hero? Was she just battling her own demons? Why were other people involved? Why did she kill? Why could the final 3 people see her manifestations? And why in the end was the blind demon defending her? I would guess that without her alive he would cease to exist, but nothing gets explained and when stuff like this isn’t explains, it drops my interest. Not knowing why she is fighting. None of it makes sense. I was utterly disappointed with this project.

Found drawn by pain a few weeks back, decided to not watch any further until all of them were available.
Just watched start to finish and enjoyed it, a few gripes and grumbles here and there but nothing major. I really loved the story and the concept as a whole. While it covers some grave issues I found watching drawn by pain to be almost therapeutic and I believe that the music really added an entirely new element to it. There are quite a lot of things that I really enjoyed about the series such as the intro with the combination of the narration and music.
But most of all I’d like to thank you all for stopping me from quitting everything artistic. The combination of story and animation seems to have touched a few nerves and calmed me on how I feel about the whole issue, before I would be so pessimistic about it that when trying to make/draw anything it would only aggravate me to the point of lashing out at things. effectively watching this has given me a chill pill, heck I’m still pessimistic and think I’m crap but experience nowhere near as much aggravation. Again thanks

I really loved this series. It was very well thought out and fantastically put together.
I do have to ask one question though. Who is the music by? The music was definitely part of what really brought it all together for me. It really worked well.
Congratulations on this! It makes me want to get back into writing again ^_^
I loved this series, and if you hadn’t said it was made by only a handful of people in an independant project, I would have believed it was all done professionally. It was well written well played and rang with a sort of spirituality in the middle of all the angst. I’d be intrigued to dig a little deeper into the Drawn By Pain universe you’ve created. Are there perhaps more children or individuals like Emily for whom their escape becomes their reality, giving them similar powers?
I would love to expand the universe a bit – and have considered some of what you mentioned (don’t want to give away too many spoilers so shall stop there .
Hopefully – we find some financing to be able to pull it off on the scale I would love to do it all at.
Glad you dug it,
