Wow….this really caught me off guard. I cried…..

Wonderful episode, very emotional. I connected to Emily so fast towards the end.

I just don’t have the words right now.

    Bravo!

That… was great. A lot better and different then from what I was expecting. I really, really enjoyed this episode.

Bravo Jes and Erica. An amazing episode. Great job. :)

New York Post, IFC, and episode 11 all in one day. I’d say it was a very good day. Awesome episode, we get to see all the dead people back. We think she is trying to take the steps needed to deal with her past but instead of dealing with her past she is trying to bury it even farther it seems. Then the flashback to the dad beating/killing the dog and having her finally rid of that wolf was a bit disturbing. Overall a good job!

  4. tubathingy April 12th, 2008 12:29 am

Another great episode! It’s like I swore to myself I’d never do things that my dad did, yet I find all the time that I end up behaving like him in some things… is this kinda like Emily suddenly realising she’s starting to do stuff that her dad did, or behave a bit like him? hmm.. intriguing

I honestly do not have the words right now to convey what that episode invoked.

Let us all remember, those who do not understand the past are doomed to repeat it.

This episode is a cumulative enforcement of why this work deserves a Webby. It ascertains a transcendance of feeling from the background of every social norm and conveys such an emotional catharsis from the audience that it cannot be ignored.

This work has put the intensity back into motion picture making.

  6. Malek April 12th, 2008 1:13 am

Wow, that was emotionally brutal. Quite revealing but still left with “the best to come”. Great job man, looking forward to 12, definately.

Amazing, can’t wait for the Finale. I love the slight change to the animated version of Emily in this one.

  8. notthefbi April 12th, 2008 3:52 am

PETA would be in an uproar if they saw this. Seriously though, amazing episode to end a great day for DBP. I think this and Episode 7 are definitely my favorites, they both show the deepest inner workings of Emily’s mind and lets all of the pain she’s been trying to hold in for the past few episodes out.

Before this whole series ends, I just want you to know that this has had the best writing of anything I have seen in a long time. Also, the animation throughout has been top notch. I know that words can’t express the amount of gratitude that the rest of the fans and I feel because of how entertaining and original this series is. Thank you so much Jesse and Erica for all the work you put into this and I hope you both put this much effort into everything you do throughout your life.

  9. Greg April 12th, 2008 4:19 am

Dude! Awesome revelation. I love the contrast between her childhood puppy and the beast in her mind and how she went from loving the puppy to killing the beast. All in order to reveal who the real demon is that haunts her. OMG I can’t wait for the finale!!!

  10. kalvaza April 12th, 2008 6:36 am

Almost forgot to comment. Really enjoyed the episode and has set me up nicely for the finale. Don’t know what to expect and I’m really looking forward to it.

    Good job. <3

Good thing Jes has great intuition. This is the girl who dropped the coat hanger…twice.

Everytime I see her performances get better in these episodes.

This was definitely well worth the wait.

They say good things come to those who wait.
You guys are almost done waiting.

    <3 Amazing.

  12. Charlie April 12th, 2008 2:42 pm

That was excellent! It was better than you said it was going to be and that is pretty damn exciting. When I realized what he was going to do I was so upset and couldn’t believe what a horrible person he was. Thank you for putting so much into this Jes and Erica and everyone else that had so much to do with this. Marissa needs to be a star!

  13. the_koby April 12th, 2008 10:10 pm

holy crap dude….the ending just about had me in tears it was so depressing. Truely something amazing!! I can’t wait for that last episode to see how everything will end…it looks like the battle of a lifetime! I also can’t wait to see this on the big screen again in New York….going to be totally awesome!!

  14. Aaron Steinmetz April 13th, 2008 11:42 am

Watching Emily slowly become her father is probably the most fascinating aspect of this movie, and this is shown such a dramatic way through the wolf’s death. Heartbreaking, in the best way imaginable. Now if you’ll excuse me I’m going to head off and go crazy waiting for the finale.

And kudos to Erica. That carrying-the-wolf sequence must have taken her forever. Damn she’s good.

  15. Tamari April 13th, 2008 1:02 pm

What a beautiful way to present the episode. I have no words to describe this. It was very emotional for me to watch. I think it is something we all deal with though, becoming what we fear. Great episode. I can’t wait to see the final episode

  16. Beckyfruit April 13th, 2008 5:10 pm

ahh i totally started to tear! crazy emotions in that one! That wolf part was sick too, Marissa is incredible, you really couldnt have casted anyone better for the part!

im soooo excited for #12!!!!!! gimme gimme!

  17. Luke McKay April 13th, 2008 5:14 pm

Many comments about the story and the characters journey here, but still this episode really has a lot that appeals to the folks like me who love the sword swinging action packed stuff. It really rolled out much like a comic in episode eleven.

But once again, one of those clues yet to be figured out.. Why is the animated Emily Waters so dark and evil looking here? What’s with that? I’m curious.

  18. gyrader April 13th, 2008 5:36 pm

This episode has so many great payoffs. I think it’s my favorite one so far. Great blend of action and story – I got misty a few times. The score and cinematography are right on the money. Erica – amazing work on this one. I’ma so proud of the team.

  19. Cheshire_Cat April 13th, 2008 6:58 pm

I think because I enjoy the Series so much, I was looking for a little bit more out of Episode 11.. however, that is not to say that it was not a good episode. At this point it feels like we could see 12 more episodes out of this Character and still not run out of things to discover about her or run out of amazing action sequences.

I found it interesting that Emily’s wolf was a version of her past golden retriever – interesting in that, even something she completely loved and received love and protection back from, became warped and vicious in her own mind. Kind of makes me wonder if one or several of the female avenger personifications is representative of her mother.. Hard to say.
Ultimately, in killing it, she has slain one of her own demons and yet she mourns it..

seems like the upcoming showdown is going to be filled with surprises and I can’t wait to see it.

I have a feeling we still have a long way to go with Emily.

  20. BrandonK April 13th, 2008 10:30 pm

That was a great episode. The next one I see is going to be even better.
I love the emotion portrayed in this episode.
Anyways looking forward to the last enstallment of Drawn By Pain.

This episode gave me chills, watching Emily just lose it, cutting down the people and beating the dog. Watching her realize what she’s done to the poor animal and that she’s doing exactly as her father did, I just couldn’t help by cry. And I had to cry cause the puppy “died”. :’(

I love looking at the “dark Emily”. Her design is just so creepy, gave me the shivers

Looking forward to seeing how things are wrapped up in 12. I just can’t tell which way Emilys path will go… I’m interested in what role Douglas will play and what will become of him in the final episode…

  22. Daruma April 15th, 2008 1:32 am

Wow, that was really amazing. Very powerful work from Marissa. Man, it’s going to be so sad to see the last episode – but I can’t freakin wait!

  23. Stephanie April 15th, 2008 10:30 pm

Really moving and pretty scary. This is the second time I saw it and I cried both times, especially where she picks up the wolf and then it disappears and her arms are empty. Long shots of Emily in woods are great too, directing is very rich. Marissa is some powerful actress! Just great!

  24. Kathy April 17th, 2008 8:14 pm

Wow, add me to the list of people caught off guard. Great work by all – can’t wait for the finale!

  25. Tim April 18th, 2008 10:49 am

Looking back at the episodes it seems I have seen a general progression in talents in the camera work as well as the acting. Some of the scenes early on seemed a bit force but here Marrisa has seemed to…for lack of better words relax into things even more. Viewers may have seen more of this in episode 6, 7 and 8 but here it really seems that the progression of the charector has gotten in tune and running on all cylinders. I look forward to seeing the next episode and watching what proves to be a shining moment for this actress and her talents.

Camera work and direction seem to be building as well along the way here. There are no glaring glitches here or there just the over all build and build of ideas and finess with angles and lighting and design. It started off a bit rough but turned into smoother and smoother transitions and camera focus. This is more of a keen and attentive nature that most of us have come to enjoy in Jess’ work.

Animation agian seems to be growing as well and in this episode seems to hit a fevered point. The flicker is more prevelent and some may point that to be a flaw but it serves to draw you in. This is what and how a person/child would do this; never the same refined cell to cell animation of a studio, to show that raw force behind it. Episode 11 shows this with flare and proves the excellence that Erica has undertaken a sole animator.

I did watch it both with and without sound as I do with most of the episodes because there is so much going on both audibly and visually. All and all an amazing setup to the finale and what will turn into a full feature. With all the cerebral twists and turns this has been an amazing ride and the ending will be no less that the tour de force the series has been.

  26. Takisha April 22nd, 2008 12:19 pm

This is brilliant!!!! i love it so much emotion..i actually cried !!! (i hardly ever cry when it comes to movies)but im am mad that the 12th episode will be the last … it shouldnt

  27. Charity April 23rd, 2008 12:03 am

I’m terrible at forming an articulate response. But wanted to leave a comment to show my support for all that hard work that you all put into this.

Good work! We’re on the edge of our seats for what comes next.

  28. Aris April 28th, 2008 5:43 pm

That was really good! I cried on that one can’t wait for the last one!

  29. nicholas April 28th, 2008 10:40 pm

Thx Nicholas and everyone else commenting! We use a program called Toon Boom Studio to do the animation. If you look at the behind the scenes page – you can see how it’s done exactly.

Jeskid, and the rest of the crew of Drawn by Pain:

Your episodes continue to amaze me, and I have been addicted to the series since the first episode. The I find the visuals and animation above what I would expect every time, the story drawing, and it has an overall quality which never ceases to amaze me. Episode 11 was no exception. I found this one very sad, and it almost drew me to tears, but it was still amazing, and I will definitely watch it again. I can’t wait for the next and final installment of the series; thank you so much for keeping us on the internet entertained with such an amazing series. Good luck in the Webby’s.

    -Ever awe-inspired,
    Evan (Omegaprime at RedvsBlue)

  33. Edem June 16th, 2008 2:41 pm

Well. This is my first comment, and as the ones above, it is hard to describe everything it showed in a few words. An essay would suit more, but it’s actually better to just watch the episode. It is brilliant.
However, after all these twists I don’t think that the finale would fit into one 12 minute episode. So either make it a 30 minute one (I don’t think anybody would mind), or make 3 more episodes (if you make a 13th one, that’s unlucky so you have to finish with the 14th one), but seriously don’t worry about going over the 12 min time limit you had so far. I’m really looking forward to this!

  34. TheEnigma June 18th, 2008 6:22 pm

Wow, so glad I found Drawn By Pain, all I have done today is watch all the episodes and every other backstage and piece of material I can get my hands on. Typically I’m not that into anime and comic book art styles, but this has really made me re-evaluate what I like artistically, fantastic work by your animator, actors and everyone involved with the project.

  35. Jeskid June 19th, 2008 2:03 am

Thx Evan! Hope you enjoy the 12th episode!

  36. Jeskid June 19th, 2008 2:04 am

    Edem,

Alas there is only about 12 minutes left in the series. I wish it could go on – but this chapter in the story must be resolved. I hope you dig it when it comes out – it is turning out to be my favorite of the series :)

Thx for all the kind words,

    -Jes

  37. Jeskid June 19th, 2008 2:05 am

    TheEnigma,

Thank you ever so much. Always makes me smile to know someone is digging what we do. It really does make it all worthwhile :)

o cant wait till emily fights that evil drawing man i can just imagin th adventure she will have i cant wait till season 2

  39. Vivika July 28th, 2008 4:51 pm

I only just yesterday discovered the series and have found it phenomenal. The transitions between live action and animation are simultaneously smooth and stuttering (I would presume to indicate Emily’s instability) in a way that really hooks the viewer. Like the viewers before me who have already said as much, this episode in particular was much more emotive than the rest and I am ever so anxious to see how everything ends.

  40. Jeskid July 29th, 2008 4:59 pm

    EVERYONE DIES!!!

    I kid….I think :)

So glad it’s working for you. Did my best not to shy away from the inner working of her mind and just glad people like yourself get it!

    -Jes

  41. some chick August 5th, 2008 4:10 pm

I think this is a wonderful series and I can’t wait to see the last episode. However after watching all the episodes I feel the the writing could be better. The dialogue felt very unnatural at several points. I think story line in itself is awesome and the actor are awesome. I just wish the dialogue flow a bit better

  42. Jeskid August 17th, 2008 2:02 am

    Shanks for the feedback!

Just announced the date for the finale – should be interesting indeed to get your thoughts. Gah – nervous :)
